It's possible to make 2d cutout animations in Blender. The advantage is that Spine exports a texture atlas and a json or binary format with no repeated frames, which is a lot lighter on memory and easier to iterate and allows runtime replacement of parts of the skeleton sprites. Or rather, you could just directly animate in Unity and not need to use Blender at all. I assume a Blender to Unity 2d bone animation importer exists in some form. In the Unity context, any 2D skeletal animation coming from Blender would need to be baked into a sprite sheet or come as a PNG sequence of images. Not always optimal (you don't use Spine if you want large scale deformations/smears/blurs etc, the only way to do these is still to just draw them frame by frame) but it's one of the easiest and probably most powerful tools in the industry if you can utilize it.
